The phrase ‘wild goose chase’ can be used to describe any pointless or hopeless event. For example:
“Steven’s goal of becoming a footballer is a wild-goose chase.”
The phrase can also be used to describe a silly search for something unobtainable, or something that doesn’t exist.
“He took us on a wild-goose chase, looking for restaurant that was taking down years ago.”
The phrase was first used to describe a type of horse race during the 16th century. In this race, every rider had to try to follow a lead horse that had no rider. The result was a group of horses chasing one horse around a field, otherwise known as a “wild-goose chase”
