Hello and welcome to languages United grammar point of the week. Today we're going to be looking at the past perfect.

We use the past perfect when we're talking about the past and we want to describe an earlier past action for example:

I felt nervous because I hadn't flown before.

If we look at this example sentence we can see it has two clauses. The first clause here, I felt nervous is in the past simple and describes the main finished action. If we look at the second clause which is the past perfect we see that it happened before the main clause. So the past perfect here is made with the auxiliary verb had and the past participle. If we have a look at this timeline we can see quite clearly that he action hasn't flown happens before the action felt nervous. So to recap the past perfect is used when we're talking about the past and we want to describe an earlier past action. It's formed using had and the past participle.

That's it! Thank you for watching and I hope to see you next week on languages United grammar point of the week.
